Questions
Why not just carry them on my hip like I already do?
Because you know how that ends. Ninety seconds in you’re hitching them up with your knee, switching arms, and your wrist is doing something it’ll complain about tonight. The sling takes the weight off your forearm and spreads it across a wide padded strap and your back, the bits built for carrying. They sit in the same spot on your hip, you keep a hand on them, and the walk home stops being an endurance event. Most parents feel the difference on the first carry.
Fit, age and sizing
For them: 6 to 36 months and up to 20 kg, once they can sit unaided with steady head control. That’s the whole carry-me stretch, from first steps to the day they’d rather walk. Mostly.
For you: one buckle adjusts the loop, so the same sling fits a petite mum on the morning run and a six-foot-four dad at pick-up. Wear it on either shoulder. Face them in for cuddles, out for a nosy around.
Is it safe? Can they slip out?
They sit upright in a deep seat, bum down, knees up, body against yours. Same position as your hip, minus the strain. The rule is simple and we’ll say it plainly: one hand stays on your child. The sling carries the weight; you stay in charge of the wriggling. It isn’t a hands-free carrier, it isn’t for newborns, and it isn’t for sleeping in unsupervised. Used as designed it’s as secure as your hip, and a great deal easier on it.
Will my shoulder hurt?
It’s built for the carries that make up most of your day: car park to café, the last stretch home from the park, the nursery run, the supermarket aisles. Two minutes to twenty, over and over. The strap is wide and padded for exactly that, and swapping shoulders takes three seconds. Planning a two-hour hike? Take the big structured carrier. For everything else, this is the one you’ll actually reach for.
Care and cleaning
Toddlers are sticky. Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, hang to dry. The print holds, the padding doesn’t clump, and it’s back in the bag by morning.
Delivery, returns and what’s in the box
Free UK delivery on every order, 7–12 working days, tracked. In the box: one Hitchkin Hip Sling in your chosen print. That’s it, nothing to assemble. You’ve then got 40 days to decide. If it hasn’t made carrying easier, send it back for a full refund.

What parents say
-
ok so I didn’t think this would do much, it’s basically a strap with a pocket?? but the difference on my arm is mad. Walked back from the park with Rory (15 months, chunky) and didn’t do the switch-arms thing once.
-
Arrived Tuesday, used it Wednesday at Sainsbury’s, writing this Thursday. Arm doesn’t hurt. That’s it that’s the review.
-
My husband was like why have you bought another carrier. He’s now the one who uses it most. Make of that what you will.
-
the arm switch!!! every mum knows it. one side goes numb, swap, other side goes numb. don’t miss it one bit.
-
She refuses the buggy. Refuses. So it was this or my arm falls off. Went for this. Arm still attached.
-
Finally something that fits in the changing bag!!! Our ergo thing is the size of a small rucksack. This is rolled up next to the wipes. Used it every single day since it came.
-
I’m 5ft 1 and my partner is 6ft 2 and it fits us both, you just pull the strap. That was the main thing I was worried about.
-
Bit of a weird one but I’m 29 weeks pregnant and physically cannot carry my 2 year old on my hip anymore. This lets me still pick her up when she asks without it being on the bump, the shoulder takes it. Would have cried without it this week ngl.
-
Grandad approved. He’s 71 and would not go near the one with all the straps. This one he just puts over his head. Took Ivy to the duck pond in it on Sunday and she was asleep on him by the time they got back.
-
I had the wrist thing (de quervains) from carrying him and it’s basically gone since I started using this. Not medical advice obviously but my physio was pleased.
-
Childminder here, 3 under 4 some days. One on my hip in this, one holding my hand, one on the buggy board. Could not do the school gate without it any more.
-
Nearly 3 and still wants carrying the second we get out of the car. He’s 16kg. Most things say he’s too big. This copes fine and the shoulder padding is thick, not that thin foam stuff.
-
Took it to Center Parcs. Used it more than the bikes. Bedtime walks, the queue for the pool, the walk back from the restaurant when he’d gone floppy. Didn’t take the big carrier and didn’t need it.
-
Wasn’t sure about the pattern from the photos but it’s really nice in person, had a woman stop me in Costa to ask where it was from. Oh and it works, Freddie’s 13kg, no arm ache. But mainly the pattern lol.
-
Machine washed it after a yoghurt incident, came out fine, colours still bright. Thought I’d mention that because that was my other worry.
-
Don’t normally write reviews. Got this in the 43% offer not expecting much. It’s the one we grab now. The expensive one hasn’t been out of the cupboard since.
-
He points at dogs the whole way home. Facing out, hand free for the coffee, arm not dying. 10/10.
-
4 stars because my shoulder does ache if I’m wearing it for ages, like a full lap of the zoo. For nursery pickup and the car park and all the little carries it’s perfect and that’s 90% of our carrying so.
-
First time I had to look at the picture to work out which way round, after that it’s like 3 seconds. Toddler in, toddler out, no buckles to find under a coat.
-
Good for the bits in between. Car to café, café to park, park to car. Not for hiking, it’s a sling not a backpack. For what it is, brilliant.
The Hitchkin difference
Built for the carry-me years.
Not a newborn wrap. Not a hiking rig. A sling for the two-year stretch where they can walk, but mostly don’t want to.
Honest about what it is.
The sling carries the weight. You keep a hand on them. It’s not hands-free, and we’d rather tell you now than have you find out in a car park.
A real person, within a day.

There are a few thousand carries between now and the day they stop asking. Make them the easy kind.
